Step 1

Create a new image. I chose its size 256x256 pixels. Create a new layer. Set the main color and the background color imitating wood. I have used 182, 154, 122 and 96, 57, 19 correspondingly.  Use “Clouds” filter (Filter-Render-Clouds).

Step 2

Use distortion for polar coordinates. Set Polar to Rectangular. All the effects are situated in Filter menu unless other is mentioned.

Step 3

Change the scale in order the image filled the layer completely.

Step 4

Create the new layer.  Paint it with the background color. Add noise Gaussian, mono, 8%.

Step 5

Use Motion Blur – 90 degree, 45 pixels.

Step 6

Increase the size of the layer to 125%, this allows you to get rid from borders at lower and upper parts of the image.

Step 7

Set the merge mode of the layer with noise to the soft light.

Step 8

Create the new layer. Now we will draw rings. Set the dark wood color (in my case that is 117, 76, 36). Draw several lines of different width. I used lines with the width from 3 to 9 pixels but you may vary it.

Step 9

Now we will use wave distortion to the lines. Try to set your own parameters or use those mentioned below:

This is how the image looks after filter use:

Step 10

Increase the size of the layer a bit, just like at the picture:

Step 11

Now we should make lines rougher. Personally I prefer Jiggle Filter of Eyecangy plug-in:

But you can use displace distortion:

Here is what we should have:

Step 12

Create the duplicate of this layer.

Step 13

Gaussian Noise (6 pixels) at the 3rd layer.

Step 14

Set the opacity of the duplicate at 50%.

Step 15

Use the motion noise at the duplicate layer (90 degree, 7 pixels distance)

Step 16

Create the duplicate of the 1st layer, place it above and set the merge mode to the soft light.

That’s all. The layers should be placed like at the picture below. You can use another merge mode for the upper layer, this will change the outlook of the texture.
